ColorMatic® lens innovations
Developed in the Rodenstock laboratory in Germany with 35+ years of photochromic expertise, ColorMatic® stands for German engineering excellence.
Extra dark glare relief
ColorMatic® Dark brings together the deepest darkening of Rodenstock photochromic lenses, consistent performance in warmer climates up to 35°C and in-car activation in one lens.
Self-tinting lenses adapt to light. Extra dark in bright sunlight, moderately tinted when cloudy, almost invisible indoors. ColorMatic® Dark blocks 100% UVA / UVB rays and helps filter more blue-violet light.
It’s the only ColorMatic® lens that also activates behind the windscreen of a car for constant visual clarity and comfort on the road, regardless of how bright it is.
Fast forward to clarity
With ColorMatic® X, Rodenstock presents its fastest photochromic lens yet.
Indoors, the lens can now change from the darkened state to the clear state at an accelerated rate – 56% quicker than before and reaching an impressive 93% clarity. The result: spectacle wearers won’t even notice that they are wearing photochromic lenses indoors.
Outdoors, the lenses darken deeply to 88%, equating to category 3 sunglass protection, that helps filter more blue- violet light, and blocks 100% of UVA and UVB. Optimised for moderate climates (23°C), it is the ideal choice for those seeking reliable light protection throughout the day and all around the year.
As of April 2026 ColorMatic® X will be available in all indices and four modern color options.

ColorMatic® Dark is the specialist solution in two classic color options: Smoky Grey and Chestnut Brown.
Photochromic lenses aren’t just another option – they are one of the smartest innovations in modern lenses. Still, many customers have questions. Here are clear answers to the most common questions for you to use in your store.
ColorMatic® lenses contain light-sensitive molecules in the lens material.
When exposed to UV light, these molecules change structure and darken the lens. Indoors, without UV, they return to their clear state. This constant reaction means the lenses adapt seamlessly to changing light.
Yes. The dyes are embedded deep within the lens material, ensuring maximum scratch resistance for the lifetime of the glasses.
ColorMatic® Dark is the only lens in our range that activates behind the windscreen of a car. This ensures glare protection and comfort while driving. For longer journeys in strong sunlight, sunglasses are still advised.
ColorMatic® lenses are designed to be the perfect everyday solution: one pair of glasses for all-day use and different activities when moving between indoors and outdoors.
They darken up to category 3, the same Level as standard sunglasses, while offering 100 % UV protection and helping to filter blue-violet light. For long periods in intense sunshine, specific sports or extended outdoor activities, we still recommend sunglasses.
ColorMatic® X always stays crystal clear indoors.
ColorMatic® Dark is also clear indoors where there is no UV transmission. It activates moderately next to a window and behind the windscreen of a car.
1Please note: ColorMatic® lenses are the best solution for every-day use, but for long hours in bright sunlight, we still recommend wearing sunglasses.
