The impact of technological innovation in ophthalmology

If a lens does not respect the different parameters of each eye, vision is less precise and the brain has to compensate. But today, this limit can be overcome and we can offer patients clearer vision.

Watch Prof. Nucci's take on technological innovation in ophthalmology.

I'd like to start with a simple question: In a world where everything is personalized, phones analyze us and even social media uses algorithms that know everything about us, how is it possible that the glasses are still standard? Every eye is different: shape, size, visual response, we know this well. We see it every day in our profession. Yet, most lenses are still built on a standard model, as if we all saw the same way. And this obviously is not true.

Our eyes do an unbelievable job, hundreds of thousands of movements a day, to focus on the world around us. If the lens does not respect the different parameters of each eye, vision is less precise. And the brain has to compensate working harder.

Today, thanks to technological innovations, this limit can be overcome. With instruments that measure every real detail of the eye, we are able to process precisely the eye and to offer clearer vision, more stable, more natural. This is where Rodenstock B.I.G. Vision™ comes into play. It doesn't start from a standard model, but builds an individual biometric model of intelligent and customized lenses. In practice, the way each eye truly sees is predicted and made it perfect. The result: comfort, precision and visual quality in every condition.

B.I.G. Technology: The heart of personalized biometric vision

The DNEye® scanner captures over 80 parameters and 7,000 data points per eye, building a biometric model transferred directly into production.

The core of the technology is the DNEye® Scanner, a very sophisticated instrument that analyzes the eye with great precision. More than 80 parameters and over 7000 data points: All this data is used to build the individual biometric model, taking into account even higher order aberration. The information is then digitally transferred into lens production, so each lens is truly custom made for each eye. The result: wider, more contrasted, more comfortable vision and better vision at all distances.

And what if the DNEye® Scanner is not available? No problem. Artificial intelligence recreates an approximate but reliable ocular model thanks to a huge database of biometric measurements collected over the years. In short, even without all the data, the lens remains surprisingly accurate.

Beyond Biometrics: Individual Visual Sensitivity

Vision isn't just about sight, it's about how much effort the brain spends correcting distortion. That is where visual sensitivity joins the equation.

Our visual system doesn't just see, it continuously processes the information coming from the eyes. But if the lens introduces distorted or blurred areas, the brain has to correct and this requires energy, attention, effort.

Each of us has a different visual sensitivity, that is the ability to maintain clear vision even in the presence of small aberrations. And it varies from person to person. B.I.G. EXACT™ Sensitive lenses, which I have studied and tested on myself, take precisely this into account, not just biometric data, but also how each visual system reacts to distortion.

The results: more fluid, more continuous, more natural vision, with a broader perception of sharpness. An eye tracking study has shown that with these lenses the amount of time the eye remains fixed on a specific point of interest is reduced and the brain works more efficiently, less cognitive effort, more visual comfort and better daily performance. It means seeing better in motion, reading faster and orienting oneself more easily. In summary, the quality of vision that truly improves everyday life.

B.I.G. VISION™ for All

B.I.G. VISION™ technology is a new way of designing lenses, applicable for all lenses.

In other words, B.I.G. VISION™ applies to all types of lenses: progressive, monofocal with accommodative support, lenses for digital life,

Ultimately, B.I.G. VISION™ technology is not a lens, it's a new way of designing vision, more precise, more natural and truly built on the uniqueness of each eye.
